Department of Nutrition Surveillance and Policy serves as the focal unit for nutrition surveillance, monitoring changes in the nutrition and food security to support forecasting, planning, and policymaking aimed at improving the nutritional status of the population.

1. Unit name: Department of Nutrition Surveillance and Policy

2. History of Establishment

The current Department of Nutrition Surveillance and Policy was formed and developed from the former Nutrition Surveillance Unit under the Department of Applied Nutrition. In 1999, the department was renamed the Department of Applied Nutrition and Nutrition Surveillance, comprising three units: Applied Nutrition, Nutrition Surveillance, and Nutrition Policy. In 2010, when the National Institute of Nutrition established a new unit dedicated to applied nutrition, the department was renamed the Department of Nutrition Surveillance and Policy.

3. Functions and Responsibilities

3.1. Function 

This department serves as the focal unit for nutrition surveillance, monitoring changes in the nutrition and food security to support forecasting, planning, and policymaking aimed at improving the nutritional status of the population.

3.2. Responsibilities 

- Develop and operate a nationwide nutrition and food security surveillance system. Regularly update the data bank to ensure timely provision of national data on nutrition and food security.

- Conduct research and propose solutions to improve nutrition and ensure food security, particularly in disadvantaged areas and those affected by natural disasters. Develop intervention models to improve nutritional status.

- Study and formulate nutrition-related policies, including nutrition economics and nutrition planning. Provide forecasts and recommendations for improving nutrition and future development directions. Participate in training and provide technical support in assigned areas of expertise.

- Participate in training, communication, education, and technical supervision in the areas under its specialization.

- Coordinate with other sectors and engage in international cooperation to develop an information system on nutrition and food safety.
